One of the most requested feature these days (in Android) is often a dark theme. In fact, I remember the feature request from last year where a dark theme was requested for settings app. After releasing the dark theme for Android messages, Google seems to be testing out the dark theme for YouTube Android app. It was first noticed in November last year that Google was preparing to release the dark theme for YouTube app and while its web version has had the dark theme for several months now, we didn’t hear about it until today. According to the number of reports, we’re seeing the dark theme is automatically enabled for a bunch of users.
A few subsets of users have even noticed a notification about the dark theme at the bottom as soon as the YouTube app was opened. The Reddit user who first noticed it and uploaded a screenshot of the same states that he is using Pixel 2 phone with Android P developer preview 4. I’m personally using Pixel 2 XL and running the same DP4 version of the Android but I haven’t seen any notifications as of today. The user also notes that he’s not a YouTube premium user.
Well, this certainly means that the dark theme is probably being released for only a small set of users and after initial testing, it could make its way to all of us.
