Xiaomi Mi A1 Android 8.1 update now rolling out, but with minor bugs

Xiaomi Mi A1 is one of the most awesome budget Android smartphones for a number of reasons. It offers great design, fluid UI, and solid battery life to make a package that’s far ahead of other smartphones in the same price range. Plus, it also brings the promise of timely updates. But that promise was not completely materializing for quite some time in the recent days as Mi A1 was stuck with Android 8.0 Oreo since the end of last year. Fortunately, that’s changing now. But unfortunately, the change has come with two of its own problems.

The fortunate part of the story is that after a wait of more than 6 months Xiaomi Mi A1 Android 8.1 Oreo update is finally being rolled out. Though the update doesn’t mention Oreo anywhere when you check the Android version of your phone in ‘About’ section after updating you’ll find it to be 8.1. The update brings minor UI changes to Power menu, an updated launcher, a systemUI theme that adapts to the color of wallpaper and a battery indicator for connected Bluetooth devices. There’re also reports that it improves the sound quality of Mi A1.

However, the slightly unfortunate part of this Xiaomi Mi A1 Android 8.1 update is that it comes with two minor bugs. The first bug wipes out your SMS history after the update. It reportedly happens when you swipe away the Messages app in ‘recents’ of your phone. The second issue is that of SafetyNet failing after the update.

The company itself has not said anything about the bugs till now, and we’ll let you know if they say or do something to fix these issues. In the meantime, if you want to update you can do so after taking a backup of your SMSes from SMS Backup and Restore app in Play Store.
