One more smartphone-maker seems all set to ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack in favor of USB Type-C port. This time it’s OnePlus, whose motto is “Never Settle”. Those two words may remain the slogan of this company for many more years to come, but finally, the company wants its customers to settle with a life of dongles it seems. That is because company’s CEO Carl Pei has confirmed himself that OnePlus 6T won’t come with a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Yes – in an exclusive interview with TechRadar OnePlus CEO confirmed that the next flagship device from the company won’t come with a headphone jack. And the reason, according to him, is timing. He said:
“When we started OnePlus, we set out to make the best possible smartphone, but making a great phone doesn’t mean putting every component available into the device. You’ve got to make decisions that optimize the user experience, and understand that at times things that provide user value can also add friction. We also had to think about the negative side [of removing the headphone jack] for our users. We found 59% of our community already owned wireless headphones earlier this year – and that was before we launched our Bullets Wireless headphones. We also had to think about the negative side [of removing the headphone jack] for our users. We found 59% of our community already owned wireless headphones earlier this year – and that was before we launched our Bullets Wireless headphones.”
Pei expects this 59% figure to be quite higher now, thanks to the successful launch of Bullets wireless headphones. So now, he feels, is the right time to do it (to ditch the headphone jack). Adding further to his comments he said:
“It was a very controversial decision. We’re not doing it for the sake of doing it and because everyone else is. We believe now is the right time, as it’ll benefit the majority of our users while keeping the downside low. We knew this was an option for a very long time, we were just waiting for the right time.”
Pei said that space freed up by ditching the jack will be used for adding some other components to the device. It may also help in improving the battery life of this phone. Let’s see whether that happens or not. For now, you can purchase company’s recently unveiled affordable Bullets V2 USB-C headphones. They cost only $20.
