Marshmallow and Nougat still power half of the Android devices in the world

There’s no doubt in the fact that majority of Android devices never get a chance to run the latest iteration of Android. In fact, they don’t get even remotely close to that. Distribution charts that come out every year have proven this again and again, and now a new distribution chart is out to tell the same story. The names are different, but the story is more or less the same: Marshmallow and Nougat are clearly in charge of Android space while Pie and Oreo are nowhere to be seen!

There’re a total of 8 major Android versions in the latest distribution chart. They begin right from 2.3.3 Gingerbread and come to an end on 8.1 Oreo. No space for 9.0 Pie, the latest version of Android. This fact alone demonstrates how minuscule is the install-base of Google’s latest Android iteration as of now. The dominant forces in Android space are still Marshmallow and Nougat, which were launched in 2016 and 2017, respectively. Together these two iterations power half of the Android devices in the world. While Nougat sits on the top with a market share of 29.3%, Marshmallow comes second with installed-base of 21.6%. Oreo is third with installed-base of 19.2%, and Lollipop fourth with 18.3%.

The absence of Android Pie from the chart, however, is also not entirely surprising. As of now only Google Pixels, Android One devices, and a few Essential Phones have received it, which is obviously not enough to make the cut in the distribution chart. Things may get better for Pie in the coming days, but Marshmallow and Nougat are here to stay for one more year at least.

This clearly shows the advantage of buying a Pixel or Android One device. If updates really matter a lot to you, there’s a lot more merit in buying any of these devices instead of other flagships. And that’s precisely why more and more companies are launching new Android One smartphones every day – because those are the only ones that can receive updates on time!
