Android 11 Developer Preview 3 – What’s New?

Google has released Android 11 Developer Preview 3 which brings a host of new features on its Pixel lineup of devices excluding the first generation Pixel phones.  According to the timeline published on their website, they are right on track with their schedule. The next in line would be the first beta of Android 11 which will be available sometime during next month. If you want to experience the Android 11 Developer Preview 3, you will have to manually flash it on your Pixel phone. The OTA program for developer preview isn’t available.

Wireless Debugging

Android 11 brings wireless debugging experience using ADB over the WiFi connection. Earlier, developers needed to use a third-party solution to achieve the same. That is now a thing of the past as Android 11 can now remember the wireless connection for debugging and greatly improves that experience.

ADB Incremental

This is once again a feature that is gonna help Android App and Game developers especially those that have large APK files. Installing large APKs is pretty slow and does hamper the developer productivity. With the new ADB incremental feature, the process is about 10x times faster.

App Exit Reasons Updates

There are several reasons such as system crash, or user action that can make apps do sudden exit. With these new improvements, developers will have more details around why their app suddenly made that crash.

App Compatibility

Android 11 DP3, apps should be updated and tested for compatibility. The recommendation to the developers is to release a compatibility update for the app as soon as there is a beta release for Android 11.

How to Install Android 11 Developer Preview 3

Android 11 Developer Preview 3 can be installed manually by downloading the system images and flashing them. As of now, you can’t enroll in the OTA program as such. But, once you manually install the images, you will get the OTA updates for the next beta releases.
