After going back and forth on the launch date, OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro have officially been launched across several markets including US and India. Due to the current Covid-19 situation, the launch event was streamed online. This year’s lineup brings the most-awaited features such as wireless charging and IP68-rating to the forefront making it attractive to the audience who were eagerly waiting for these additional features.
OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro – Pricing
With Qualcomm increasing pricing on its Snapdragon 865 processor, companies that use this processor are bound to make up for that price increase from their customers. The Snapdragon 865 brings 5G connectivity to the smartphones and that’s exactly why there’s increase in the price. On the other side, we have consistently seen the trend of price increase with OnePlus’s flagship lineup. This year is no different.
OnePlus 8 base model will have the price tag of $699 whereas OnePlus 8 Pro variant will start from $899. Although the price is higher than the last year, it is still competitive in the market with phones costing as much as $1000 for the base model.

The Major Difference – Display
Although I have highlighted all of the differences between OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro, I think I should talk about the display which is gonna make a lot of difference. OnePlus 8 will have maximum of 1080p resolution with 90Hz refresh rate. Compare that to the 120Hz refresh rate on the 8 Pro and that alone will make 8 Pro a serious contender (if you can afford it). Although, the 120Hz refresh rate is capped at 1440p resolution, it would have been nice to see 90Hz option on the 8 Pro. The only other thing that it comes down to is the resolution. I personally can’t stand 1080p resolution on such a massive display (as it makes UI elements such as icons bigger).
This year, OnePlus is bringing one of the most sought after feature – Wireless Charging to its flagship device. There’s one catch. In order to charge your OnePlus 8/8 Pro with full 30W speed, you need to use their own Wireless Charging Dock which costs extra $70. This means that you cannot use any other wireless charger since 30W warp wireless charging technology is patented by OnePlus. It also means that no other wireless charge capable smartphone can charge at such speed using OnePlus’s charging dock. The technology behind this 30W warp wireless charger is phenomenal but limiting it to its own smartphone could prove fatal in the long run.
